What is eTorque in a Jeep or Ram Truck?

 

An eTorque system is an option to change the traditional alternator with a belt-drive motor generator. This system can also be called the mild-hybrid system, used to improve the Jeep or Ram truck’s performance. 

 

How eTorque Works

 

When using eTorque, the generator works as an electricity supplier to the battery pack. A 48-volt current will flow toward the battery as the engine is working. The battery pack will then convert the 48-volt current into a 12-volt current, turning the generator into a power source for the vehicle accessories. In addition, it could charge the vehicle’s lead-acid battery that usually runs on 12-volt power. 

 

The eTorque motor provides additional torque when the engine is running under 2,000 rpm in a Ram truck. Overall, eTorque works like a typical alternator that delivers power from the engine to the electrical system. 

 

Improvement with Using eTorque

 

The power that comes from the generator and the 48-volt battery improve the quality of the vehicle. It improves the fuel economy and gives more power to the drivetrain for towing and hauling. The use of eTorque also makes the machine work smoother and quieter. The system is electronically controlled with a smart design that includes an automatic engine stop/start function plus six other different modes of operation. 

 

This system helps save fuel as it will turn itself off when idle, like when you’re stuck in a traffic jam. A downside of the automatic stop/start system is that the older version of eTorque works a little slowly. It takes time to get going after turning off, but, with the new 48-volt-powered one, it’s almost unnoticeable. 

 

eTorque would also spin the engine’s crankshaft at a restart, helping the vehicle turn back on after a standstill. The recaptured energies of braking and deceleration will charge the battery pack, aiding fuel economy and improving driving performance.

 

Why Doesn’t eTorque Replace the 12-Volt Battery?

 

eTorque works wonders, but the traditional 12-volt battery is on the more efficient side when facing extreme temperatures. The 12-volt battery also makes the electrical system simpler for the 12-volt accessories.
